In 1986, Keokuk was named one of the first five Main Street communities in Iowa, creating Main Street Keokuk, Inc. We are an accredited, not-for-profit economic development organization focused on historic preservation and downtown revitalization.
Through our partnership with the City of Keokuk and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, we promote and advocate for tools and resources that support district investment. Since our inception, Downtown Keokuk has seen nearly $74 million dollars in private investment through property acquisitions and building improvement projects. Today, Keokuk’s downtown district is home to nearly 300 residents and 190 businesses who employ almost 900 people.
Throughout the year, our organization provides well-rounded programming that meets or exceeds both state and national standards. Whether we are hosting dining or retail promotions like Puttin’ on the Glitz, organizing community events that draw hundreds into the district like Downtown Trick or Treat, providing market data and business development resources to entrepreneurs, highlighting funding opportunities for property owners, or showcasing available spaces, we are committed to making Downtown Keokuk the heart of our community.
Vision: In the future, downtown Keokuk will be known as the commercial center of the tri-county area. Its progressive, friendly, service-oriented atmosphere and its blend of historic and new buildings and businesses will both keep people in the community and draw people to the community.
Locally owned businesses will continue to be the strength of downtown as a commercial center. A redefined retail mix, built on existing businesses, will enhance downtown’s importance to the community as an economic hub of available goods and services.
Capitalizing on its advantageous geographic location – anchored on the southeast end by the mall and suburban-style commercial establishments at the northwest end – the high volume of vehicular traffic on Main Street will be an asset. Continuing to concentrate stores along this well-traveled artery in well-maintained buildings with restored facades and effectively designed windows will be a business’ and the district’s greatest advertisement.
Unused and under-utilized upstairs spaces will be filled with residential and commercial tenants who support the pedestrian-friendly, “cool” 24/7 district, filled with the hottest “must visit” dining, arts, entertainment, and retail businesses. Improved properties and successful businesses will add to the community’s tax base with increased property values and retail sales.
Downtown will be a source of community pride and will be the place to live, work, play, and invest in Keokuk.
